3M Prestige Solar Control Window Films Traditional window films (up until the invention of PR70) consist of a dye / metal sputtered coating to reduce the heat and glare to varying levels depending upon the level of metal / dye included in the film. In other words with these films, the heavier the coating of metal / dye results in more heat and glare reduced. Unfortunately with these films, as the metal coating gets stronger, reflectivity also increases. Also the natural light allowed to enter the room is reduced. Therefore the more effective a film is in reducing heat and glare, the more reflective the window becomes and the less light it lets through. Prestige 70 (PR70) film uses a whole new technology in the reflection of radiant energy, using MOF (Multi-layer Optical Film). Instead of using metal or dye to reduce the heat, the film works by manipulating the path of light through the hundreds of optical layers. These microscopic layers bend and reflect away unwanted Infrared heat (97%) while allowing visible natural light to pass through and maintaining the appearance of standard clear glass. This allows the external facade of buildings to remain almost unchaged, meaning this film is perfect for apartment buildings where some units may suffer from heat problems much more than others. In the past, if one apartment wanted to solve heat problems, the application of solar control film to one set of apartment windows but would change the external look of the building. This ...
